How CCPA Group Uses Sustell® to Support Livestock Decarbonization

The Challenge

As climate commitments, Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) goals, environmental labeling schemes, and sustainability reporting requirements continue to evolve, livestock value chain stakeholders face growing pressure to demonstrate greenhouse gas reductions in a credible and transparent way. The need for reliable, comparable, and actionable environmental data is becoming increasingly important for producers, feed companies, and the wider agri-food sector.

The Approach

To help its customers address these challenges, CCPA Group made the strategic decision in 2024 to adopt Sustell®, the animal protein industry’s most trusted environmental footprinting platform.

Based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology and aligned with internationally recognized standards including FAO and Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) frameworks, Sustell® evaluates environmental impacts at farm-gate level by considering the entire production system, including feed, animal performance, farming practices, and other production inputs.

For CCPA, the objective is straightforward: help customers measure environmental performance so they can identify effective decarbonization opportunities and make informed decisions that balance environmental, economic, and zootechnical outcomes.

Make it measurable

“The decarbonization of livestock production sectors first and foremost relies on the ability to measure in order to act. Through environmental modelling, we help our customers objectively assess the impact of their nutritional and technical choices and identify the most effective levers to reconcile environmental, economic and zootechnical performance,” says Marina Panhéleux, Sustainability R&I Manager at the CCPA Group.

Turning Environmental Data into Practical Action

CCPA uses Sustell® as an environmental modeling and decision-support tool to:

  • Quantify CO₂ emissions at farm-gate level.
  • Compare alternative nutritional scenarios.
  • Identify solutions that deliver environmental, technical, and economic benefits.

By combining environmental modeling with nutritional expertise, zootechnical innovation, and deep knowledge of livestock production systems, CCPA supports customers in identifying and quantifying optimization opportunities across their operations. According to the company, modeling scenarios developed by its Technical and R&I teams can enable carbon footprint reductions of up to 15% kg CO₂-eq.

Demonstrating Impact

Beyond modeling, CCPA has evaluated several nutritional solutions through third-party verified life cycle assessments, generating quantified environmental performance data that customers can use within their own sustainability programs to reduce climate change impact by between 3 to 7%.

These assessments provide verified data that can contribute to customers' carbon reduction efforts and sustainability reporting activities.

Supporting Future Requirements

CCPA believes that reliable environmental data is a prerequisite for credible environmental labeling and transparent communication across the value chain. By combining Sustell®'s recognized environmental modeling capabilities with expertise in livestock farming, nutrition, and digital technologies, the company aims to support customers' decarbonization journeys while helping them prepare for future market, regulatory, and consumer expectations.
