Sustell™ used to assess the environmental footprint of innovative feed additives at the 23rd European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition

The dsm-firmenich booth at ESPN June 2023

Rimini, Italy, 21 - 24 June 2023

Sponsored by dsm-firmenich, the 23rd European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition brought together approximately 500 experts in poultry nutrition and production. Participants included feed companies, feed additives and feed ingredient manufacturers, poultry health companies, poultry and egg integrators, veterinary and nutritionist consultants and some of the most important academia dedicated to poultry nutrition.

dsm-firmenich engaged with participants throughout the event including from their well-attended booth and notably presented 11 scientific posters and convened a satellite symposium on ‘Directing the Metabolic Functions of the Microbiome in the Gut of Poultry’.

Referring to dsm-firmenich posters where environmental impact results were calculated using Sustell Laura Locatelli, Manager Business Development Sustainability, EMEA, DSM Animal Nutrition and Health – Precision Services, noted “There was great interest for a solution that presents a harmonized and validated measurement and communication of the carbon footprint of poultry feed as well as the meat and egg products.

“Sustell™ meets the industry’s need for accurate and complete LCA results per kilo of feed using EU Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology across 19 environmental impact categories and per kilo of egg or meat at farm level using primary data. Furthermore, it’s compatible with the Global Feed LCA Institute (GFLI) – the most accepted ingredient database and as such helps the whole poultry value chain communicate in one, validated language, the full environmental impact of production.” Concluded Laura. “

Extract from the dsm-firmenich poster 1:
The Sustell™ assessment showed that with the precision biotics supplementation, the terrestrial eutrophication potential was reduced by 12.3%, and climate change by 2.2%, which corresponds to about 230 tons of CO2 equivalent when considering a broiler operation that processes 1 million birds per day.

Poster 1: “Effect of a precision biotic on the growth performance, welfare indicators, and environmental footprint in broiler chickens

Poster 2: “A novel protease improves apparent nitrogen retention from excreta and reduces ammonia emissions from litters in poultry houses
