New EU Code of Good Labelling Practice Endorsed: A Step Forward for Feed Producers

In late 2024, the European Feed Manufacturers' Federation (FEFAC) introduced a new Code of Good Labelling Practice, which has now been endorsed by the EU Commission. This endorsement marks a significant step forward for feed producers across Europe.

The new code has been updated to include guidelines on the environmental labelling of the feed, ensuring that producers adhere to EU-aligned practices such as the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) method, based on life cycle assessment (LCA).

Sustell™, the leading solution in feed and animal protein footprint calculation, is well-positioned to support food producers in complying with the new code. With its full LCA functionalities and connection to multiple least cost feed (LCF) recipe software, Sustell™ aligns with the code's requirements, offering comprehensive solutions for path compliance and environmental impact calculations at scale.

This development sets a new bar for these practices, encouraging a more unified approach to feed labelling. The Code of Practice not only recommends calculating the feed footprint and specifying it on labels but also emphasizes the importance of collaboration with downstream partners. This holistic approach aims to provide farmers with the necessary information to calculate their own footprints, fostering a joined-up approach from feed production to processing.
